The Precise Control of Gas Purity and the Evolution of the SEMI, LED and PV Fabs Part II: LED,PV
By A. Wiesnoski, L. Shon-Roy, J. Herman and S. Pereira
March/April 2012

While LED and solar PV fabs have yet to employ many high purity manufacturing techniques, once the obstacles of cost are overcome, these industries could reap the benefits of significantly higher yields.

Abstract
The introduction of purifiers as the main vehicles of contamination control, as in semiconductor device manufacturing, will become more pervasive in LED manufacturing and perhaps PV manufacturing as optimization improves with increased manufacturing volumes. As these electronic industries mature, and controlling costs through improvement in process control becomes more prevalent (as opposed to controlling manufacturing materials and equipment costs), more focus will be placed on contamination control and the use of purifiers, as is done for the semiconductor industry. Here in Part 2 of our article, we will address how and which practices are being implemented in the LED and solar industries as contamination control and the use of gas purifiers becomes an important solution to process control, and ultimately yield enhancement in those industries. These practices and disciplines are derived largely from the lessons learned in the semiconductor industry, which were discussed in Part 1 of this article..
